Hartzell Engine Technologies’ New 24V Alternator and I-Series Cabin Heater Selected by Piper Aircraft for New G1000-Equipped Piper Seminoles

September 13, 2013

Piper Aircraft Inc., has selected Hartzell Engine Technologies LLC to provide its latest I-Series cabin heater and ES-Series 24V/100A alternators as standard on new Piper Seminole multi-engine advanced training aircraft.

“The I-Series cabin heater and the ES-Series lightweight alternators represent the most advanced technologies for their respective categories,” stated Hartzell Engine Technologies President, Mike Disbrow. “We are very proud that Piper Aircraft has recognized their advancements and selected them as standard aboard the G1000-equipped Piper Seminole.”

“To support electrical needs of the latest Piper Seminole’s advanced avionics and systems, Piper Aircraft chose to upgrade it to 24-volt capability,” he added. “With a list of improvements and features our new heater and alternator have proven to be ideal for Piper’s requirements.”

“G1000-equipped Seminoles bring enhanced levels of pilot situational awareness and simplicity to the Seminole cockpit,” said Piper Vice President of Engineering Jack Mill. “By selecting Hartzell Engine Technologies’ components as standard equipment, we keep flight school aviators comfortable and ensure the glass panel has all the electrical power required for traditional proven Seminole performance.”

“Hartzell’s new 24-volt cabin heater and alternators provide the performance we demand while delivering exceptional reliability and value to flight schools throughout the world that will be flying Piper Seminoles to train future aviators,” Mill added.
One feature of the new alternators that Disbrow feels will be especially beneficial to flight schools that operate the all-glass Seminoles is the alternator’s built-in noise-filtering technology.
“With all the electronics in the Piper Seminole, that seemingly small feature will make a huge impact on the comfort level for the students and instructors,” he said. “By helping to keep static out of their headsets, the filtering will be especially appreciated on long cross-county flights.”

About the I-Series Cabin Heater
Highlighting the I-Series cabin heater is an advanced Inconel combustion chamber, which has proven to deliver superior durability in extreme heat over ceramic-coated stainless steel. Hartzell Engine Technologies obtained FAA Technical Standard Order (TSO) approval prior to the certification of the new-generation Seminole.

“While the Piper Seminole is the first general aviation OEM application for the new I-Series heater, we have been using the Inconel technology for many years in our S-Series cabin heaters, used on large military aircraft including the Boeing Chinook,” Disbrow said. “While cabin comfort in colder climates is critical, another benefit to flight training operations is that the I-Series units feature a replaceable spark plug that has a built-in ground electrode to improve serviceability and reduce maintenance costs.”

About the ES-Series 24V/100A Alternator
The new ES-Series belt-driven alternators provide a number of benefits including delivering 42-percent more electrical power at engine cruise settings, built-in noise filtering and through-flow cooling to ensure reliable performance in the higher-temperature environments found inside of engine cowlings.

“To meet electrical demands of its G1000 avionics suite, technologically advanced aircraft like the Piper Seminole require clean, consistent electrical power,” Disbrow said. “We created the high capacity ES-Series alternators to meet those demands and also, with features like through-flow cooling we have greatly improved reliability and provide flight schools with years of trouble-free operation.”
